Hugo Alves http://www.hugoalves.com, is one of the most prestigious Portuguese Jazz musicians of today, either as a trumpet player, a composer, a Big Band Director or as an Educator. He has an active career in Jazz for close to 20 years, and almost 30 years in Music, since he begun learning his instrument at the age of 7. He has several participation's on CD's as a sideman, and has 4 released albums in his own name: Estranha Natureza (2003), Taksi Trio (2005), Given Soul (2007) and the recent Double Dose (Dec.2010), being all distinguished as “Best Of The Year” by Portuguese Press.
As an Educator, Hugo Alves is today a University teacher on two of the most renowned Official Superior Schools Of Music (in Lisbon and Oporto) where he teaches the disciplines of Jazz Trumpet, Jazz Orchestra and Improvisation for Vocals.
He is also the founder and Artistic, Musical and Pedagogical Director of the Lagos Jazz Orchestra http://www.orquestradejazzdelagos.com , a unique project in Portugal, that confines 3 strategic branches, being the first “Performance” (Big Band, Redux Big Band, Saxophone 4tet, Brass 5tet, Trad Jazz Band, among others); the second branch is the “Educational Service”: a Jazz School AJMMA http://www.ajmma.tkorganized in 3 levels, and an extra Junior Level for children; a “Jazz in The School” Program that takes demonstrations to children students of public schools; a regular monthly advanced “Masterclass” Service which has included renowned world jazz musicians (Peter King, Michael Lauren, to name a few); the third branch is the co-production one, which produces mainly the Lagos Jazz fest http://www.lagosjazz.com which enters this year in it's 10th edition.
Hugo Alves is also recognized by the Portuguese Government as an “Artist Of Superior Cultural Interest”, since years, supporting and granting most of it's activities and LJO. He has worked will inumerous Jazz Musicians worlwide, and in countries such as Portugal, Spain, France, UK, South Africa, Italy, among others.
