Eddie Parker's Mr Vertigo

The release of the new Loose Tubes CD “Dancing On Frith Street” on Django Bates’ own label Lost Marble (Lost Marble LM005) in October was a timely reminder of the phenomenon of that band. Eclectic, witty, fun, great playing.

Mopomoso

Continuing to celebrate the best in free improvisation Mopomoso starts the year in style with an international line up of from Switzerland, Brazil, Spain, Germany, Italy and the UK.

Rodrigo Montoya / Marcio Mattos

A remarkable pairing from two of Brazil’s finest improvisers, Montoya’s far from traditional work on the shamisen exhibits a keen sense of open exploration and Mattos on cello is a delight. Busy, inventive and uncompromising music of the highest order.

Chefa Alonso / Albert Kaul / Barbara Meyer

A welcome return visit for Spanish saxophonist Alonso and German pianist Kaul, this time with visuals from Meyer, presenting a UK debut for this collaboration, exploring the imaginative and expansive relationships between sight and sound.

Claudia Binder / John Butcher / John Edwards

Swiss pianist Binder here playing with two great improvisers. Butcher and Edwards are regarded world wide as being amongst the very best exponents on their respective instruments and Binder’s work is noted for her ability to get to the heart of the music. Intimate and expressive music of many shades.

‘Reciprocal Uncles’

Another UK debut sees Amirani boss and soprano sax wizard Gianni Mimmo in the company of the highly regarded Gianni Lenoci whose credits include Steve Lacy, Harold Land, Kent Carter, Don Moye and Marcus Stockhausen to name a few.

Final Winter tour date and only UK appearance to launch the trio's new CD ‘The Cigar that Talks’, this concert sees a rare UK appearance for saxophonist Michel Doneda.

Immersed in New York’s downtown left-field music scene, saxophonist Ingrid Laubrock's new project brings together a cast of some of her favourite creative musicians – virtuoso guitarist Mary Halvorson, John Hébert (bass) and Tom Rainey (drums) – all equally comfortable with improvisation and interpreting composed material.

We are delighted to welcome back Jewish music group Shir, playing music from their last CD “Ashk’farad”, Klezmer and Ladino, together with some old favourites and new tunes.

Steve Lehman Octet

Named a 'Rising Star' on the alto saxophone four times by the Downbeat Magazine International Critics Poll, Steve Lehman is a saxophonist and composer whose work resides on the frontiers of contemporary music.

 

Friday 21 | 

Troyka

Troyka’s intense live shows have seen them hotly tipped to follow in the footsteps of Polar Bear and Portico Quartet and become the next young band to explode from the capital’s fertile jazz scene.

 

Saturday 22 | 

Mike Westbrook's Village Band

Mike Westbrook has led and composed for a succession of big bands and small groups since the 1960s. His current sextet, based in the South West, first appeared on the scene in 2006.

 

Sunday 23 | 

LJO Vortex Sessions – 20th Season

London's longest jazz residency, LJO starts its 20th season with a six-month run of 'Vortex Sessions. Directed by Scott Stroman, the band features a host of top soloists, including Alec Dankworth, Pete Hurt, Pete Beechill and Paul Clarvis.

Wing Theory

Wing Theory is a trio of musicians who have discovered the 'secret of flight through real time combinations of nothing predetermined'. A seductive language that vibrates with subliminal surprise.

Albert Newton

Albert Newton played for 12 years as a quartet: Harry Beckett, Pat Thomas, John Edwards and Charles Hayward. At Harry’s memorial benefit the group thought that they would be playing for a final time as Albert Newton, but as the last notes faded, John remarked that they had to keep playing this music and so Harry’s absence has thrown them into a new dynamic as a trio. Tonight’s gig is the first of this new Albert Newton trio: the spirit lives on in music.

Phil Robson & The IMS Quintet
featuring Mark Turner

Guitarist Phil Robson presents a project of all-new music, commissioned by 'Derby Jazz' which is based on the theme of communication, ancient to modern as part of the first UK tour for this all star band.

IMS features, from NYC, one of the finest saxophonists in the world today, Mark Turner as well as the amazing Gareth Lockrane (flutes), Mike Janisch (bass) and Cuban virtuoso, Ernesto Simpson (drums).

Alexander Hawkins' Ensemble

Bringing together five of the country’s most exciting young creative musicians and established star multi-instrumentalist Orphy Robinson, the Ensemble exploits its highly unusual instrumentation to explore structural boundaries and the intersections of compositions and improvisation.


Thursday 27 | 

Parker meets Belovèd Bird

Django Bates’ critically acclaimed album Beloved Bird, celebrates the music of Charlie Parker. His piano trio, featuring bassist Petter Eldh and drummer Peter Bruun, more than filled the Vortex when they launched the album in 2010.


Friday 28 | 

Hans Koller Big Band

Plus special guest Evan Parker

Pianist Hans Koller launches his new album 'Cry, Want (on the psi label).

 

Saturday 29 | 

Empirical

Winners of the Mobo Best Jazz Award 2010, Empirical's smart post-bop style has drawn admiring notices on both sides of the Atlantic. Their debut recording went on to be voted album of the year by both Jazzwise and Mojo magazines.

Fofoulah

The Vortex is proud to present Fofoulah, a new group from London which features members of Outhouse Ruhabi, the much-acclaimed Outhouse project with Wolof Drummers from The Gambia.

Stan Tracey & Evan Parker

'Two craftsmen juggling ideas without letting any of them fall to the ground.' Pianist Stan Tracey is a mainstay of the modern jazz scene, influenced by the music of Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. Throughout the sixties he was the resident pianist at the legendary Ronnie Scott club, as well as leading influential bands. Evan Parker is the most important saxophonist to emerge in the current music, introducing numerous concepts to the ever evolving "new music" forms.

Stan & Clark Tracey

Stan performs an entirely improvised set with Clark Tracey on drums. Performing for the first time as a duo, Stan and Clark have just recorded 'Soundcheck', a double CD of the duo plus trio, due for release in February on Resteamed Records.

 

Monday 31 | 

Jim Perkins' album launch

Composer, producer and arranger Jim Perkins launches his debut album, 'Grains'. The album features five solo piano pieces and five pieces for piano and electronics, each with their own unique musical identity.
